When the AC or heat goes out
Danville summers are hot and humid. The average high in July is close to 89°F (Wikipedia). Winter nights regularly drop below freezing. Losing heat or air for even a day is miserable, and for older family members or anyone with health concerns, it can be dangerous.
Before you call, check these. They fix more problems than you'd think:
- Thermostat. Is it set to Cool or Heat (not Off or Fan), with the right temperature, and does it have fresh batteries?
- Breakers. Check both the indoor unit's breaker and the outdoor unit's breaker or disconnect.
- Air filter. A clogged filter can choke airflow and, in summer, freeze the indoor coil.
- Outdoor unit. Is it running? Is it blocked by leaves, grass clippings or a bush?
- Condensate drain. Many systems shut off automatically if the drain line backs up. Look for water around the indoor unit.
If those all check out, it's time for a professional.
What we help with
- AC repair: warm air, no air, ice on the lines, water leaks, strange noises.
- Heat pump repair: blowing cold, constant running, iced-up outdoor unit.
- Furnace and heating repair: won't ignite, short cycling, no heat.
- System replacement: when to repair, when to replace, and what's changed in 2025–2026.
- Maintenance: keeping a system running through Danville's long cooling season.
How it works
- Tell us what's happening on our contact page, and where you are.
- We point you to independent HVAC contractors that serve your area.
- You hire directly. You get the diagnosis, the quote and the warranty from the contractor. It's free to you.
Hiring an HVAC contractor in Virginia
- License. Virginia requires a state contractor license for contracting work on a single job over $1,000 (Va. Code § 54.1-1100). System replacements always cross that line, and many repairs do. Check any license on the DPOR License Lookup.
- Refrigerant certification. Technicians who work with refrigerants must hold EPA Section 608 certification. It's fair to ask.
- Get the diagnosis in plain English, and the price before work starts.
- Ask about permits on replacements, and who pulls them.
